Blairsville was laid out in 1819 along the Conemaugh River and thrived as a canal port through the 1820s-1850s, with boat-building and warehouses before the Pennsylvania Railroad made the canal obsolete by 1860.
The borough's older housing stock reflects that river-town history — established lots close to downtown, with newer development further from the water.
