Irwin was incorporated in 1864 and built its early economy on bituminous coal, with the Westmoreland Coal Company opening mines here in the 1850s — the borough itself is just about a square mile, one of the more compact towns in our service area.
Post-war growth along Route 30 turned Irwin into a bedroom community for Pittsburgh commuters, so most lots here are established, moderately sized residential properties rather than large acreage.
